Founded in September 1994 by the Artistic Director Kerri Heywood, A Peace-Full Reign Dance Inc., was inspired by Victor J. Belton, Pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Decatur, Georgia. Having knowledge of Kerri's background in dance, Pastor Belton suggested that she consider starting a dance ministry in the church. In fact, Kerri's ballet and modern dance training has been quite extensive. She studied ballet and point, at the Bernice Hammond Academy of Dance, in Washington, DC, from the ages of 4 to 13 years old, and studied modern dance at the District of Columbia Repertory. Since the beginning of A Peace-Full Reign Dance Inc., Kerri has shared her passion and skills for dance with children ages 5 to 14, youth ages 15 to 19, and most recently, adults 20 to 47 years of age.
Currently, Kerri attends classes at The Atlanta Ballet Company under the instruction of Roscoe Sales. Recently, Mr. Sales performed in Dracula three consecutive years at the Fox Theater. Mr. Sales had been a student under the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The style of modern dance Kerri studies and teaches is called Horton Modern Dance, greatly influenced by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Focusing on the community, at large, and its need for supervised, structured activity, that promotes discipline and overall mental and physical well being, A Peace-Full Reign Dance Inc., is seeking available space, to purchase or lease, in order to bring dance and the performing arts to the Decatur area of DeKalb County, Georgia.
Beginning with classes meeting two days a week, running from the 3rd week of August through the 1st week of June, which coincides with the public school year, A Peace-Full Reign Dance Inc., will provide Horton Modern, ballet, liturgical dance, and other creative forms of dance and the performing arts, to children and adults of all ages. After school programs will be offered and eventually a bus will be secured (or donated) to provide transportation from school to the program.
Starting the 2nd week of June through the 1st week of August, a summer long Dance/Theater camp will take place with classes in dance, drama, costume creation and design, back drops and props art, audio/video production, along with advertising and program design. Before and after care will be provided as well.
Some programs will be structured to assist high school students with needed community service hours along with College Internships. Participating college students will also have an opportunity to give back to the community through volunteer instruction. Fields trips, indoor and outdoor games, social time and special guest speakers will broaden the performing arts experience provided by A Peace-Full Reign Dance Inc.
From the beginning to the finish of a production (play), A Peace-Full Reign Dance Inc., will offer the discipline, involvement, instruction and outlet that can bring about a lifetime of positive change in each participating individual and the community.
